When I first saw it, I thought this was just a cool way for Hot Fuzz to make a reference to Shaun of the Dead. Likeroscoe has since explained to me that these two films are actually part of the Three Flavours Corneto Trilogy, films that are directed by Edgar Wright, written by Simon Pegg and star both Pegg and Nick Frost. The third installment of the trilogy is called The World’s End and it’s coming out next year.
